Chinese New Year

I love celebrating and teaching about Chinese New Year. My Kinder students are always excited when we read about Chinese New Year. Here is a picture of our Social Studies bulletin board dedicated to Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year Book Display

Students learned about the Chinese Zodiac and what animal represents the year they were born in.

The sentence frame we used for this project was  "I was born in the year of the _____________"

I try to make my own student name tags every month.  For the month of January I used a red dragon to represent Chinese New Year.  Students wrote their name with a red marker.  I think making this name tags has saved me some money :)

I fell in love with these Eric Carle "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" Wall Decals that I couldn't help  buying from Target for $9.99.  I think the beautiful pictures add pizzazz to the sink area.

I am officially a Pinterest Addict! There are so many wonderful shared ideas for classroom organization  that I wanted to share one of my favorites with you. I purchased crates at target for $3.00 each.  I had some left over fabric of my favorite author "Eric Carle" and I purchase a big piece of plywood from Home Depot which they kindly cut for me.  This is the end result.

Sorting activity for little hands

At the beginning of the school year I like to spend time teaching colors.  I took a trip to Walmart and found this cute set of plates for $2.95.  I love them!!! 

I think this is a wonderful activity to teach colors and sorting. I brought them for my 4 yr. old and she loves sorting her toys in them. She began to group her little toys according to color.  You can use crayons, fruit, vegetables, M&M chocolates, and just about anything with color.

Line and Shapes Art

Discuss the different types of lines : curved, straight, zigzag, spiral lines, etc.  Draw different lines on the board and have students identify them.  A perfect book for this lesson is "Lines that Wiggle"

  

My Kinergarten students love this book.  This book explores the many different ways that lines are used. Definitely one of my favorite art books.

Preparing for a New School Year

Last day of school!!!

Bringing down all the colorful and creative work that hung from these walls. 

 Now it is time to reflect, plan, prepare, and make 2011-2012 another successful year.  

Huichol Art

The Huichol Indians of Mexico are known for their beautiful yarn paintings.   Huichol Indians place hot melted wax over a board and adhere yarn to create a beautiful and colorful image. Our Kinder interpretation of this project was made by using glue and coloful yarn to outline a picture drawn by

the students.

 

Dia de los Muertos Art Project

We love Eric Carle! My students were very excited to learn about author and illustrator Eric Carle.  We created a graph to find out which Eric Carle Book was our classroom favorite. 



Another of our activities while learning about this wonderful author was creating a picture using same techniques Eric Carle uses to illustrate his books.

I made these Very Hungry Caterpillar goody bags for my daughter's 4th birthday party.

 

She likes them so much that she uses them to carry her snacks and school supplies.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar fabric was purchased from

 Students had fun creating a  full-body portrait of themselves to welcome parents for our Open House. 



Word Families

Students use picture clues to review previously taught short vowel sounds and word families.

This is a beautiful and colorful story about a curious rabbit who wants to find out what makes a rainbow.

The big surprise in the book is when a rainbow of ribbons appears with the turn of each page as the rabbit asks all his colorful animal friends. This is a great book to teach colors.

  Students created a rainbow cloud using white construction paper for the clouds and colorful tissue paper for the rainbow. The colors hanging from each cloud are the colors that each student was able to identify.
